The first high-speed, north-south, transalpine rail link is one step closer to completion following the recent breakthrough of the Lötschberg base tunnel in Switzerland. Rock support was a major issue during the driving of the Mitholz section, but a strong rock reinforcement system helped the contractor finish the job ahead of schedule.
