Automatic bit changing for Simba

2006 Jun 06

A new bit changing system has been developed by Atlas Copco which makes it possible to drill a complete fan pattern with a Simba rig automatically.

Specifically designed for the Simba ABC Total package, the system saves time and increases productivity as drilling can be done completely unmanned over a shift or overnight.

The system consists of a simple rotating cassette adapted to carry drill bits according to their size and shape. The cassette features a joint link, making it easy to fold over the rig?s feed so that it is not in the way. Depending on size, up to 12 bits can be accommodated in the cassette. The first system is currently being tested with a Simba at the Golden Grove mine in Australia.

Epiroc operated under the trademark “Atlas Copco” prior to January 1, 2018.
