Advanced automated bolting at Kiruna

2010 Apr 23

The latest rock bolting technology, including the Boltec rig and Swellex bolt, is being used to rapidly reinforce large areas of LKAB’s Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden.

As part of LKAB?s comprehensive mine reinforcement programme at the Kiruna mine, a fleet of Atlas Copco Boltec bolting rigs is making rapid progress. The rigs, which install Swellex bolts, are involved in three projects to provide rock support in older, as well as new sections of the mine.

With its two booms, one for bolt installation and one for screen handling, the Boltec minimizes manual handling and can carry up to 10 bolts in its automated carousel. The rig also offers cement handling and injection capabilities for grouted bolts and rebars.

Epiroc operated under the trademark “Atlas Copco” prior to January 1, 2018.
